Abres is located 5.7 km from Vegadeo at an altitude of 70 m, on the right bank of the river Eo and flanked to the east by the Espiñeira mountain, occupying a wide plain on which there are several neighbourhoods and farmhouses.
For centuries, Abres was the last stop on the Way of St. James in Asturias before crossing the River Eo into Galicia over an old late medieval bridge, A Ponte Veya, the only one in the lower reaches of the Eo until its disappearance in the 18th century, when the stone arches gave way and the bridge was completely ruined.
Apart from the Jacobean route, the muleteers' route from Galicia also reaches Abres, entering the village through the district of A Ferrería, a toponym that refers to the iron activity of the area, as witnessed by the traces left in the perforations in the hillside of the mountain.
