Taramundi Hillfort

Taramundi Hillfort

Excavations have revealed that it was inhabited for many centuries.

The castro of Taramundi (Os Castros site) is located in the southern part of the urban area of the capital of the council. In the year 2000, work began on the study, excavation and conservation of the site, so that it is now in a good state of conservation, and has become a new enclave to visit in the town. So far, 1,100 square metres have been opened up, a dozen buildings have been found, as well as several sections of streets and different short segments of fortifications from different periods of the settlement. The settlement was occupied during the Bronze Age (approximately 2,800 years ago), the Iron Age (6th and 5th centuries BC), and up to the Roman period (1st and 2nd centuries AD).

The most important archaeological materials found at the settlement are an antennae dagger (bronze hilt and tip, iron blade and wooden sheath) from the Late Bronze Age; hand-made pottery with spatulate decoration from the Iron Age; and pottery, brooches, iron candlesticks, keys and ceramic lamps from the Roman period.
