Mon Route PR-AS 114

From A Revoqueira to Mazo de Mon: a walk through history, forest and river.

The route begins in the village of A Revoqueira, located three kilometres from San Martín de Oscos. This village stands out for its well-preserved popular architecture and gentle terrain dotted with green meadows, where cows and their calves graze.

The path soon enters an autochthonous forest of oak, chestnut and birch trees, which accompanies the visitor to the village of Mon. There, the presence of the Palace of Mon, a majestic Baroque construction that reflects the stately architecture of the region, is impressive.

The route continues along an old cart track bounded by stone walls and chantos - slate slabs laid vertically - covered with moss and ferns, until it reaches the chapel of Santa Marina. From this point, it is worth stopping to contemplate the valley of the river Ahío, at the bottom of which is the Mazo de Mon.

The descent runs through a centuries-old chestnut grove dotted with corripas - circular stone constructions for storing chestnuts - until you reach the hidden mallet. In this natural spot, the remains of the old mallet and the irrigation channel that fed it are still visible and in good condition.

Before returning, we recommend that you enjoy the surroundings of the Ahío river, a riverside ecosystem with alders, ash trees and willows that provide shade for the riverbed. Halfway up, a left-hand turn leads to the village of Ventosa, from where you return to A Revoqueira.
