Mazo de Meredo
The Mazo de Meredo, also known as Mazo de Suarón, is an ethnographic site that allows us to contemplate the tradition of using water as a source of energy. It is located some fifteen kilometres from Vegadeo, on the left bank of the river Suarón, which gives it its name, coinciding with the middle stretch of its course. The complex houses the mallet itself, a flour mill and a whetstone, all moved by the forces of the waters diverted from the river Suarón from its spectacular diversion dam.
Although the exact date of its construction is not known, it can be affirmed that the mallet existed in the 18th century. It should not be forgotten that the river Suarón, which is the reason for the name of this region during the Early Middle Ages, was home to a large number of centres linked to traditional iron metallurgy and the production of derived products, especially tools, both for the countryside and for the mines. This is why there were several in Meredo and other places in this area.
