Christ of Paramios

Christ of Paramios

Curious monumental stone crucifix

The Paramios Cross is a monumental stone crucifix, which was used by walkers and pilgrims to stop and pray. Its location in Monticelo, next to the road, relates it to the same homeopathic function as the Galician "cruceiros" (crosses). It was a pleasant place from which one could watch the passing of passers-by and acquire news. It was also a place for gatherings that took place on the steps of the cruceiros.

This Cruceiro has been listed in the Architectural Heritage Inventory of Asturias since 1997. It is called Cruceiro del Cristo and dates from the 18th century. It is located on the edge of the road that led to the old hostel of Paramios. In the same parish, the Casa de los Lastra in Vixande is listed, with the Chapel of San Benito and San Nicolás linked to it. This building dates from the 17th-18th centuries, so it could be said that the Crucero is related to this complex.

Legend has it that it is a Hispano-American representation of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá, patron saint of Colombia and of great devotion in Venezuela.
