This small square houses the monument to Castropol as an Exemplary Town, received in 1997.

It reflects the reasons why it was awarded the prize:

  • The Menéndez Pelayo Popular Library, one of the best public libraries since its foundation in the 1920s.
  • The Castropol Sea Club and the Castropol Sailing Club, sporting entities that have been able to bring together the fundamental aspects of seafaring and fishing life in the estuary.
  • The Corpus Christi festival, an expression of the cultural and traditional sensitivity of the local people.
  • Community support for the repair of the parish church and the restoration of the altarpiece of the Assumption, popularly known as that of the Marquesa.
  • The cession by the company that owns the Theatre-Casino for its restoration and use as a cultural centre and library.
  • The neighbourhood's respect for the conservation and maintenance of the town's admirable urban character.
