Forest Route SL-AS 6

Circular route from Villanueva that connects history, nature and ethnography. It passes through forests of birch, oak and chestnut trees, villages with histo...

The route begins in Villanueva, capital of the council, from where we set off in the direction of Santa Eufemia. There, a beautiful chapel in popular Baroque style, built between the 17th and 18th centuries, is preserved and is well worth a visit. We continue along the road and, after about 300 metres, we reach the Castañeira Bridge; after crossing it, we take a path on the right that leads us to a splendid birch forest next to the abandoned farmhouse of Abilleira.

Shortly afterwards, we can take a small path to the right to visit a curious stone with human shapes of unknown origin. Returning to the main path, we start the descent along the edge of a large rocky crag, until we reach the road at the place known as A Ferrería, a place name that recalls the old ironworks activity in the area between the 18th and 19th centuries.

After crossing the bridge over the river Villanueva, we take a path to the left that climbs up towards the village of Pacios, surrounded by a thick forest of chestnut and oak trees. From Pacios, the route enters an imposing oak wood that covers both sides of the valley, descending again to Santa Eufemia, where we recommend a visit to the Ecomuseum of Bread. From there, return along the same path to Villanueva.
