Ruta a Mina Carmina PR-AS 280
The route begins in San Martín de Oscos, where you can visit the parish church, with a Latin cross floor plan, a large portico and an inscription from 1828. To the right of its façade is one of the most representative hórreos (granaries) in the area, with a mixed slate and straw roof, characteristic of the primitive models. Opposite the church is the manor house of the Guzmanes, an old 18th century manor house, which preserves a coat of arms carved in stone on the portico of its main entrance.
From this point, the route crosses the bridge over the river San Martín and begins the ascent to Mount Marón, entering a pleasant forest of birch and oak trees. At a crossroads, the path allows you to continue straight on to the geodesic point or turn right towards Mina Carmina.
At the top of Mount Marón, where the geodesic point is located, there is an impressive panoramic view of San Martín and other neighbouring municipalities, such as Santa Eulalia, Illano, Grandas de Salime, Pesoz and A Fonsagrada.
From here, the path goes back to the previous crossroads, to continue towards the Mina Carmina through a pine forest. The route continues along a path with a new fork: straight ahead you reach the mine, and if you turn right, you reach the village of Ascuita.
The Carmina Mine was last mined in the 1950s and 1960s, extracting ore containing silver, zinc and lead. From the area where the old cable car that transported the ore to San Martín was installed, you return along an ascending path that leads to Vilarín de Trasmonte, passing by the hermitage of Santa Engracia.
