Route of the Muleteers
The route begins in the vicinity of the village of Espasande. Half a kilometre in the direction of Taramundi, an information panel on the left-hand side marks the start of the route.
This is an old trade route used by merchants who travelled from Castile to Asturias and Galicia to sell their products. In the midst of these surroundings, if you close your eyes, you can still hear the creaking of the ox carts that once travelled along the road. Shortly after the start of the route, you will find the remains of an old inn where travellers and their animals used to stop to rest.
The route crosses an extensive forest of eucalyptus and pine trees, alternating with groves of oak and chestnut trees. The abundant shrub and herbaceous vegetation transforms the landscape with each season of the year, offering a different sensory experience on each visit.
Following the signs, you reach the village of Lourido, where you can still see examples of popular architecture and meet a local craftsman who keeps alive the tradition of basket weaving. From there, a gentle descent begins to A Ferrería, the final point of the route, located next to the river Eo, which marks the natural border between Asturias and Galicia.
To return to Espasande, take the same route back.
