Hiking
Ruta del Ferrocarril
The walk begins at the old railway station of San Tirso de Abres, now restored as a private home. Just 300 metres away is the first of the six tunnels that dot the route, always accompanied by the presence of the river Eo, whose waters offer spectacular panoramic views and a river ecosystem of great ecological and fish farming value. This river is home to species such as trout, lamprey and salmon, among others.
The route then crosses the N-640 road and leads to an old power station built in 1932. Just before reaching it, you go through another tunnel excavated in the rock, which leads to the pedestrian footbridge over the Eo.
Shortly after the last tunnel, the walker comes across old masonry huts with slate gable roofs, which were used to store the coal needed for the railway. Continuing along the path, you reach the point where the O Cairo stream marks the natural border between Asturias and Galicia.
This is the end of the Asturian part of the route. From this point, you can choose to return or continue for 6 km on asphalt until you reach the Galician municipality of A Pontenova (Lugo), where there are still four calcining furnaces that were used to transform the ore transported by the train.
