Caleiro La Sorpresa

Old industrial lime kiln using coal as fuel, built in the late 19th century.

This lime kiln is located at the entrance to Vegadeo on the N-640. It was built at the end of the 19th century at the mouth of the river Suarón, next to some docks and linked to the Eo estuary, as this location facilitated the export of lime to different parts of the Cantabrian coast.

It was the most important kiln, in terms of production and operation over time, of the industrial lime kilns that used coking coal as fuel from the limestone of the Eo basin, which replaced the traditional kilns, located on the banks of the estuary, fuelled by rock, which had ceased to compete with the industrial kilns installed in the centre of Asturias in the mid-19th century.
